Hair Brushes: How to choose the right one from the many

Tyres, paddle, round, wooden, electric, with wild boar bristles, synthetic: the world of brushes and styling tools and the quiet hair dryer is really vast and to choose which products to use you need to know their characteristics.

Let’s start from a general assumption: “Brushes are mainly divided into two families: pneumatic brushes and round brushes. Pneumatic brushes are mainly used for combing. They can be found with more or less long bristles of different thicknesses. The bristles are generally made of plastic or wild boar,” explains hair stylist Giordano Gargione for diego dalla palma milano, who launches his first line of professional hair care brushes – it is very important to choose the right brush for your hair type.

The “paddle” brush is the most popular and transversal, but recommended for medium-long and long hair. You should also pay attention to which bristles to choose: very thin bristles are suitable for wet hair, unlike thick ones. Round brushes, on the other hand, are those used for styling. Here you can find different types, the thermal ones, with aluminium tube and bristles that can be made of boar, nylon or reinforced boar (the whole of the two) and those with the body all in wood and bristles generally in boar or reinforced boar. There are also new generation brushes that join the thermal brush to the wooden one, i.e. they have a wooden body covered with aluminium and bristles that are generally made of wild boar or reinforced boar”.

But which one to choose? “It depends on the desired style and for this reason we have simplified the choice for the consumer: just find the style you want to obtain and we will give you the right brush. All that remains is to choose the diameter, S for short hair, M for medium-long hair and L for long hair. For example, in order to obtain an extreme smoothness the right brush is the wood brush which, thanks to the high density of bristles and their specific cut at different heights, guarantees a perfect grip of the lock. To give volume, instead, the brush to have is the round thermal brush that, thanks to the aluminium tube and the bristles in professional nylon resistant to high temperatures, guarantees a uniform distribution of heat, a total closure of the scales for a healthy and bright hair. The material of the brush itself is also important. We, for example, have opted for a very high-quality wood with a protective, moisture-proof and non-slip coating varnish. We also selected a longer than average handle and a light weight to make it easier to handle.

Tips and Rules

Having shiny hair as fresh out of the hairdresser is the goal, but how to achieve it? “When you wash your hair, it’s always good to keep an average temperature, never too high, because it goes to open the scales of the hair that wears out and breaks in the famous split ends. A small trick is also to do the last rinse with fresh water that seals the scales of the hair well and makes the hair bright and healthy,” reveals Giordano Gargione for diego dalla palma milano.

But how often is it good to wash your hair? “To be healthy, hair must be clean because the hair bulb must breathe and if too much sebum is deposited it does not breathe and in lack of oxygen it weakens and the hair becomes brittle and breaks. To keep it always clean it is good to brush it a couple of times a day to remove dust and impurities that accumulate and to avoid the formation of knots”.

Another fundamental attention is to the materials of the styling tools and the temperatures at which they are used: “First of all it is important to remember when the hair is wet, it is in its moment of maximum fragility and it is necessary to treat it with combs and brushes with teeth as wide as possible to reduce friction”, recommends Luca Colombo, owner of Atelier Luciano Colombo (Corso Magenta 66, Milan) – Under the shower it is better to help yourself with conditioning cream and untangle it gently. Once you proceed to styling then, if you use brushes with ceramic support you have to be very careful to use them when the hair is almost dry. Straighteners, on the other hand, must absolutely be used when the hair is well dry and on which a protector has been applied after washing. The hair dryer, on the other hand, should never be too close to the brush and the lengths, you must keep a distance of at least 10 cm. Those who use the curling iron should always use it on small, dry strands that should not be left wrapped for more than 6 seconds”. A real beauty secret? “At night, even in summer and even if it’s hot, it’s good to lie down with your hair loose to promote oxygenation of the hair, which is essential to ensure a healthy and shiny look”, concluded

“It is good to know that any mechanical action has consequences on the hair: risk of breakage, facilitation of fragility, weakening and falling. So you need to follow some simple instructions to better treat your hair”, says Dr. Elisabetta Sorbellini, dermatologist specializing in trichology – As a general rule, it is good to choose instruments appropriate to your hair type, delicate and professional, that do not attack the hair too much. In fact, even simple hair bands, which are not all the same, should not be underestimated: it is better to choose the latest generation ones that do not damage the hair by gripping it in grips, but gently wrap it. However, it is always good not to make tails too tight or hairstyles that pull the hair. Before washing the head, then, and this is a tip that is good for both curly and straight hair, it would be good practice to apply an oil or mask to facilitate the combing. Same thing after washing: always apply an oil or conditioner leave in and comb your hair calmly. They are excellent and products rich in natural oils and anti-ageing hyaluronic acid are to be preferred, because even the hair ages and you have to take care of it”.

Even styling tools, however, risk being a double-edged sword if handled in the wrong way: “Compared to styling tools no demonization – confirms Dr. Sorbellini, however – the most recent ones are designed not to damage the hair, but I recommend not to use them daily. Going against the nature of your hair is not good for you. You can do it from time to time, straighten or curl your hair shaft, but not every day and not in the habit. A good rule, however, is to take a couple of cycles a year of supplements that also help the health of the hair from the inside. September is the ideal month because hair washed much more frequently during the holidays, treated with products perhaps different from the usual, stressed by chlorine, sun and salt, need to be cared for even more.
